WEEK TWO - MINGLE

Has it really been only a week since you found yourself in this place? But just like that, the days have come and gone, and five of your number have been lost. The space seems a little larger, less claustrophobic. By mid-afternoon on Sunday, after the execution, guests will also realise that the hotel is once again pristine thanks to the work of the ever-present faceless and nameless staff members, and the elevators are all in working order again.

Something is peculiar about your rooms, though -- something you may notice after you come back from the execution. Your desks now have a different Polaroid camera on them. This time, each resident gets one with a total of 10 film each. Film for these cameras in particular can be refilled in the gift shop. For Kurama in particular, the camera is larger and built so that he's able to (somewhat) see through the lenses and hit a button with his nose to take the photo. What differentiates these cameras from the ones you received last week is for you to find out.

At precisely 8AM on Monday morning, the fog recedes slightly, allowing just the slightest hint of sunlight to peek through. There is a gentle sea breeze, comfortable weather in every feasible way.

Rise and shine, everyone, it's time to make the day yours, just like the rest of the week. Better enjoy it while it lasts.

I suppose the hotel won't be mad at you.

[ She laughs a little. ]

I think blue and purple would look nice on you.

[ Soft colors... he thinks that suits her. Yuki starts pulling the blue and purple flowers out of his little pile. ]

Why those colors in particular? I hope the purple one isn't because I'm from a rich family...

It'd be hypocritical of me to use purple because your family is rich, wouldn't it? My parents have one of the highest statuses out of the extended Sohma family, so I don't care about that.

[ Not that... it really applies to him, since he never really lived with them anyway. ]

[ She got the feeling that the family was Big and Extended, but that's also interesting. Iria also gets the feeling that Yuki had issues, so it's not like he was spared due to his parents' status.

[ So Iria ties her incredibly long hair into a loose braid and puts that over her shoulder. ]

There, now it won't snag anything in particular.

Great. It'll look really nice with that braid too.

[ He starts working on it, carefully weaving the flowers together. It takes him some time, since he wants to get it right.

As he looks down at the flowers in his lap, he starts thinking. ]

...How are you holding up?

... Just fine, I suppose.

[ She doesn't want to sound like she's bragging about it either, so her voice is a little quieter than usual. ]

I'm glad.

[ He had wondered. She seemed to be fine after that incident in the gift shop, so Yuki hoped that she would be fine now. It's a relief that she is.

But as for himself— ]

I thought... I would be better than I am.

[attritional]

[ Sometimes, having absolute faith in your family works wonders. Not recommended though. ]

... You know there shouldn't be shame in feeling terrible because of it.

[ He nods. It's something he knows, but it's nice to hear it. ]

If these hallucinations didn't have a lot to do with Honda-san, I would be fine, but...

[ His gaze doesn't leave the flowers in his hands. ]

I haven't told you why she's so important to me, have I?

You told me that she was the first person to accept you, curse and all. And from what I gather, it's because she was very kind to you.

[ Unless there's something else-- ]

Yes. She was.

[ He thinks about his next words, quietly bending and weaving the flowers. ]

Even within my family, she was one of the first people to accept me. You would think other people with the curse would accept one another, but things are more complicated than that. They always are.

[ He pauses. ]

I did have people who supported me, like Hatsuharu. But I didn't realize how important that was to me until recently.

Sometimes you don't realize how important it is until it's gone.

[ She assumes that Hatsuharu is one of his cousins. ]

Things being complicated will always be the norm, unfortunately, since people are never completely rational. But still... I'm glad you had someone who supported you.

[ So that he wasn't completely alone. ]

Mm. You're right. Everyone has their own motivations behind their actions, after all.

I'm glad too. I would still be in the main house without him. I would have never met Honda-san either.

I'm glad... that things are going better for you. You deserve it after everything that's happened.

[ He finally looks up at her, a soft smile on his face. ]

Thanks. I'll admit... it surprises me to hear you say that, even though I haven't told you much about what's happened to me.

[ He's dropped bits and pieces, but he has a feeling that Iria can fill in some of those blanks. ]

I guess I'm used to feeling like I need to prove I deserve it.

Then the fact that you deserve it is even more prominent, since you haven't told me much about yourself.

[ She smiles back at him. ]

[ That surprises him even more, and he can't help the way his eyes widen slightly.

He looks back down at his lap. ]

...I can tell you more about me, if you want.

Only if you're comfortable with it.

[ Since she figures Yuki's state of mind isn't all that great right now due to the hallucinations. ]

[ His state of mind really isn't that great right now, but he thinks talking about some of this might help. ]

The head of the Sohma family... is like a "God" for the members of the zodiac.

[ He thinks that should summarize the dynamic of his family. Yuki ponders over what shade of blue to pick next. ]

[ Yikes. From what she's heard of the family so far, the person doesn't sound like a "kind god". ]

... Does the head do anything other than pass down judgment?

I was young, but I still remember that when I first met Akito, I cried.

[ He settles on a light blue hyacinth. That fits Iria, he thinks. ]

There was something deep within me, within my chest, shouting. "I wanted to see you, I didn't want to see you"—a mix of feelings I couldn't understand. It went beyond just myself.

[ Iria would like to say a baby's reaction is rather telling, but she'll just... keep that to herself. ]

Was that because of your conflict with being possessed by the rat?

It was. I could feel the spirit's emotions overlaying my own.

[ He falls quiet again. ]

I was always by Akito's side, for as long as I can remember. I was Akito's playmate, so I was there all day, every single day. I didn't question it at the time because I was so young. I was told the Rat was the closest to God, so it made sense to me at that age.

But despite that, it wasn't good for you.

[ That seems to fit along the lines of getting Yuki out of the main house that he mentioned before. ]
